Accountability and How it Helps in A Weight Reduction Program

So today I want to talk about accountability and how it is so beneficial for a weight reduction program.

So accountability this week has come up in a lot of different ways. I belong to accountability groups for many of the courses that I am taking and we have been sharing our successes and challenges which makes them more real. In one of my accountability groups we text our goals for the day at the beginning of the day and if we accomplished them at the end. For me this means that if I have told someone I am going to do something I will do whatever I can to make that happen.

When it comes to a weight reduction program or even if you are not in a program and just trying to reduce there are a couple of things that will really help you to achieve what you set out to do. The first thing is you do need to have some kind of a baseline to measure your results from. I would recommend pictures and measurements. Lots of people don’t like taking the pictures but it is worth it when you get to do the comparison and see the differences that your efforts have made. The second thing is having a goal that you would like to reach. For some this is a weight on the scale and for others it is a clothing size or an outfit that used to fit that you want to wear again. The third thing you need is some kind of accountability.

There are many different ways that you can have that accountability. One way is by having to report to someone usually weekly to weigh in and measure. This also usually involves a journal. This can also be done on your own but past experience is that when you have to report to someone else you are more diligent about keeping a journal and doing the weigh and measure. That someone that you report to can be a coach but it could also just be a friend or family member that is willing to support your journey and be encouraging. There are also groups that you can join to keep you motivated which is another form of accountability.

However you decide to take the journey, try to involve someone supportive. It is always nice to have a friend or companion to talk to when things are tough and to celebrate when things are good.

Tune in next week for more discussion about lifestyle and food.
