Things We Do Not Realize We Are Eating

Today's topic is about the things we do not realize we are eating.

So if you are like me before I started this journey you never looked at the ingredients label on the food you bought. Mostly you just look at the advertising on the front and believe that it is what it says it is. Unfortunately that is not a great idea. I have learned that there are rules that the companies need to follow to make statements on their products but they can be a little misleading. Like reduced salt statements look good but reduced from what. All they need to do to make that claim is to reduce it slightly from the original recipe, it does not necessarily make it better for you to consume. Many of the things that make a package attractive to the consumer are very misleading. Low Fat is a big one. Everything out there is low fat or reduced fat, unfortunately if they take out the fat they usually up the sugar to make it taste better or add something else that we probably don’t really want in our bodies. Another one is no Sugar. When it has no sugar it has something added to it to make it sweet. This is usually some type of chemical that is hard for our system to deal with and actually can cause our bodies to be confused. Also there are many studies on these sugar substitutes that are showing us that the consequences of using them are very bad for us.

Ideally we should be eating as close to natural as we can. Things that have only one ingredient. Or if not, then ingredients that we can pronounce and actually know what it is. Most packaged foods of course will have something in them that helps to keep it preserved. There are many different things that are used for that purpose. Some are better than others.

Please start reading the labels on the food you are purchasing. There are lots of things out there that are bad for us but just as many that are good for us. So if you read your labels you will be able to make better decisions about what you are putting into your body.

Tune in next week for more discussion about lifestyle and food.
